Since the 2024 ESC guideline, stroke risk in atrial fibrillation is described with the CHA₂DS₂-VA without the sex category. The calculator shows the score (0–8).

What changed in 2024?
The 2024 ESC guideline removes female sex as a separate risk point (CHA₂DS₂-VASc → CHA₂DS₂-VA) because it is mainly an age-dependent risk modifier. The clinical meaning of the scores is set out in the guideline itself (see references).
FAQ
Why does sex no longer count?▾
ESC 2024 considers female sex a risk modifier rather than a risk factor. The CHA₂DS₂-VA therefore applies equally regardless of sex.
